When I first heard the comments of Ayman Al-Zawahiri, I was (as I am sure many of you were) incensed.
I mean livid to the point of profanity. It felt like the ultimate insult of an immigrant Muslim that didn’t know and didn’t care about African American (Muslim or non-Muslim) pain or progress.
I mean "the nerve, the disrespect, the AUDACITY!" Then I remembered Satan’s strategies of "divide and conquer". I remembered that Satan uses people as agents of his will when they get angry and upset.
That included me as a potential victim and host of Satan’s objectives. He wants to just get everybody to start fighting and cursing and being angry at everybody else. Chaos and confusion is what he wants to reign in individuals and in society.
So I calmed down.
And I consulted my teacher, Imam W. Deen Mohammed (RAA) and asked "What would he say and do?"
These are the answers I found among his teachings. I took these two commentaries like one would take two pills and I haven’t been upset by the "House Negro" comment since.
"Try it you’ll like it"
Question to Imam Mohammed about the Muslim image and terrorism: Imam Muhammad many Americans and Christians feel fearful of the Islam faith because there is so much in the mass media with violence not only in the middle east even on our own shores, how do you address the fears of many American who tend to associate Islam with violence and so forth. We know that it’s not all the members of Islam. But how do you address those fears in Americans and others around the world?
Answer from Imam Mohammed: Regretfully we have, that is the Muslim nations of the world, have reacted to problems with the west, circumstances, unfavorable circumstances for them that are caused by the West, colonialism, colonial domination and etc., and have not had a situation for themselves to just sit and quietly, soberly study the West and what has happened and come up with a direction or with an attitude or disposition for themselves, a way of dealing with the West in a rational and understanding way.
That’s starting to happen now.
We have Islamic think tanks in America. Muslims who have come to this country from abroad and they have think tanks and they are working on all of these problems.
So eventually we’re going to have solutions. And the whole world is going to be better because intelligent people who devote themselves to the study of human problems in the world, they are going to come up with the answers because they are well meaning people and they going to come up with the right answers.
But what I think is very important for us to understand is that what we see of Muslims in the media is trouble most of the time.
People who have been scarred deeply by situations that they can’t change and that are unfair to them and they see America as the power protecting Israel and supporting Israel with great sums of money, all of this reaches them and they respond emotionally to it.
So we need to understand them. We need to understand their situation, we need to sympathize with them too.
They are not bad people. Many of them who have been driven to be terrorists, they weren’t bad people before.
They’re bad people now. But they weren’t always bad people.
And if they could get the chance perhaps they would come back to being good people. We don’t know if they would get some understanding from us, perhaps and from Israel, perhaps they will come back to being good people.
Muslims are not terrorists. We don’t love violence. In fact, we don’t even like to be angry. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) someone asked him saying, "Tell me something that can benefit me for the rest of my life since you’re Prophet." He said, "Avoid anger, avoid giving yourself to anger; giving into anger." That was his advice and we who study the Religion from him, from the Word of G’d and from him, we want to be like him so we hate to give into anger.
The Muslim is the person of peace. Muslim means a person of peace. Islam is the Religion of peace and our greeting is peace be unto you, As Salaam Alaikum. How can a people with so much peace, the name of their Religion and everything and they are called peace be people of violence.
That’s a terrible, unacceptable contradiction. We are promoters of peace.
And Muslims were led by Muhammad, the Prophet, to bring change in the world and to civilize the world and conquer the beast in our life or in our society with education, not with the sword that’s the way it was meant to be. But if people fight over land or power then you going to have a new character, its going warp their character, change their character and that’s what has happened.
When Muslims are angry on television its not because of Religious matters directly.
Its because of a political matter directly or an economic matter directly not Religion.
But we tend to think these terrorists are Religious or responding to their Religion.
Some writers give fundamentalism as a reason for their behavior. Fundamentalism is not the reason for their behavior. Fundamental in our Religion is the same as fundamental in your Religion. What is fundamental is what you stick with. It’s what is more important. It means you stay with the basis and you stay with what is basic. You stick with what is more important in your Religion. You stay with what is essentially your life and that is good that’s not bad.
But, again, if the mind of the individual is drunk, then he will go to his Religion and he will pick up the wrong thing. He will misperceive what’s there and he will misuse it.
So this is what we have when the people are driven crazy out of their minds because they don’t have their home any more. Their home is taken and here come people, the same people who took their home last year coming back to get another one of their homes.
Yes, I sympathize with the Palestinians on the West Bank, here they come for another home so this drives them mad.
Science tells us if you drive any creature to the extreme that creature comes out of his normal form and you can make a monster out of a normal creature. Well we know that. As Americans who study science, we know that.
So, why can’t we look at the situation and have sympathy for those people who’ve been scarred very deeply and who are being driven out of their minds, so much so that they are not presenting their Religion to us, they’re presenting their rage to us and the West is responsible for most of that rage.
(But "What does that say about political relationships between Muslim African Americans and immigrant Muslims with anti-American agendas and sensibilities?") Imam Mohammed (RAA) answers–
Muslim African Americans with Imam W. Deen Mohammed (RAA) have their own Jihad in the West: There is still bitterness wounds and sore places in the Muslims in the world because of them having to be beneath or under the West in the world power. And consciously and unconsciously, they’re reacting to that hurt.
Some of them want to punish America and see America lose it’s strength and lose it’s dominance.
There’s nothing wrong with that (attitude) if you want to do it in the firth Muslim spirit; to replace it with something better.
We’re (he was speaking of Muslim African Americans associated with his thinking at this point) not in a good situation. Our situation is good on the one hand with the Muslim world but bad on the other hand.
We take the position that there is more good in America than bad and the opportunities for us as citizens is generally much better for us as Americans than it would be for us if we were not Americans. They (Immigrant Muslims of an anti-American mindset) don’t like that too well. Even though, perhaps the rational one’s agree that that is right.
So they’re going to burden us as much as they can with what they claim to be Islamic concerns so that we don’t contribute to the strength of this society (in America).
If we listen to their advice to us in business (or politics, etc); "What is halal" and "What is not halal", they will advise us right out of business (or politics, etc); and out of any opportunity to have life and benefit in this society.
So, what I am saying is we should ignore their advice.
They are not in any position to advise us because they are too hurt to be just toward us as members of the American society.
They can’t be just toward us.
Not if we’re going to contribute to the strength of this society.
Because they don’t like to see this society grow and expand they want to see it become weaker and weaker and weaker so that they can become the dominant ones.
So we’re either going to be with them in their Jihad against the West or we’re going to be independent and have our own Jihad in the West.
"I (Imam W. Deen Mohammed) got my own Jihad in the West. I ain’t joining nobody else’s."
